The Department of Physics was established in 1989 for B.Sc. (Physics) course. The intake capacity of the B.Sc. (Physics) course is 20. Also the M.Sc. (Physics, Materials Science) was started in 2016 with intake capacity of 20. Also the Department of Physics is a ‘Recognized Research Center’ approved by Shivaji Univerity, Kolhapur since 2015. Experienced faculty of the Department is devoted to research in their respective areas of specialization. The Department has always placed equal emphasis both on teaching and active research. The total research grant received by the department from various funding agencies is over Rs. 60 Lakhs and the number of research publications in renowned journals is increasing yearly. The Department of Physics have signed two functional International MoU with Tokyo University of Science, Noda, Japan and Henan University, China in the years 2016 and 2018, respectively. Under International MoU, till now, 01 faculty, 02 B.Sc. students, 03 M.Sc. Students and 02 research students have participated in “Japan-Asia Youth Exchange Program in Science” (Sakura Exchange Program in Science) administered by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) in Tokyo University of Science, Noda, Japan during 2016 to 2019. Faculty of the department has visited Henan University, China as a Visiting Professor through International MoU during 2018 and 2019. Department has arranged consecutive six International Conferences on Advances in Materials Science since 2016 to till date.
Total six Ph.D. scholars are working in the department. The major research areas of the department are ceramics, supercapacitors, thin films, aerogels, superhydrophobic coatings for self-cleaning applications, photocatalytic coatings for self-cleaning applications, nanofiber membranes for oil-water separation application, sol-gel processed materials, solar cells, etc. The instruments available for smooth conduct of research are Electrospinning Unit, Dip Coater, Spin Coater, Spray Coater, Hydrothermal Unit, Contact Angle Meter, Roughness Meter, Spray Pyrolysis Unit, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, PE-Loop Tracer System, Centrifuge, Oven, Furnace, Magnetic Stirrers, Ultrasonic Cleaner, UV-Light Chamber, Digital Balance, KBr Press Unit, Distilled Water Plant, Micropipettes, pH Meter, etc. All the cabins, staff room, lecture halls and laboratories in the department are equipped with computer and internet facilities. The department has its own mini-library with a collection of about 250 text/reference books.
The Department of Physics has built national and international collaboration in the field of materials science. Also the department have career oriented certificate course on Instrumentation: Self-Cleaning Solar Cell Panels approved by National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) since 2021. The Department of Physics welcomes the researchers around the world to visit our research laboratory through the fellowship/scholarship programs like India Science Research Fellowship (ISRF), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India and Summer Research Fellowship Programme, Indian Science Academies, India. The department will take up joint research projects in the field of Materials Science. Additional time is given to pay individual attention to the students in their practical and laboratory work as well as internal exam and tutorial sessions. Different advanced project work and seminars are encouraged to develop innovative and systematic approach to physics learning. The guest lectures and invited talks by the eminent professors and researchers from India and abroad are arranged to create awareness amongst the students about the cutting edge advancements in Physics and research in Materials Science.
